Turkey is speeding up the process to choose a conceptual trainer alongside plans to build an indigenous fighter jet. The new trainer aircraft will be specifically designed to train pilots to operate new fighters procured through the indigenous TF-X program.

Under the program, Turkey¡¯s Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM) issued a request for information (RfI) on March 13 to formally start preliminary design work on its ambitious TF-X program, according to foreign and local news media. The RfI calls for ¡°the indigenous design, development, and production activities of the first Turkish Fighter Aircraft to meet Turkish Armed Forces' next generation fighter requirements".

The TF-X aircraft will replace Turkey¡¯s existing Lockheed Martin F-16 fighter jets in the 2030s. The SSM says the RfI call is open to companies and organizations which are capable of designing, developing and/or manufacturing 5thGeneration Fighter Aircraft. The Turkish government has put aside an estimatedUS$500 million as expenses to be used for preliminary design work of TF-X fighter, with a first prototype planned to be completed by 2023. Several renowneddefense companies around the world, including Lockheed Martin of the U.S.,

China¡¯s Shenyang Aircraft Corp., France¡¯s Dassault, Britain¡¯s BAE Systems, andSaab of Sweden, are reportedly interestedin the program,

The SSM is expected to issue a requestfor proposal (RFP) for the TF-X duringthe third quarter of 2015, with localdefense industry sources telling HIS Jane¡¯s that this will culminate with the winnerselection process before the end of thisyear.

Turkish Aerospace Industries, Inc. (TAI),Turkey¡¯s center of aerospace systems, has previously completed a conceptualdesign work for the TF-X, in cooperationwith Saab and at a cost of around US$20million.
